New Man of Steel Poster

Well ladies and gents Superman or rather “Man of Steel” is back. This reboot brought to you by the minds of Christopher Nolan of “Dark Knight” fame as a producer and Zach Snyder who directed “300″ and “Watchmen” helms this with Clark Kent aka Superman  played by the hot piece of man meat Henry Cavill, a decent casting .  We’re back with a completely, slightly, kinda, new story on Superman, an alien sent from Krypton to help the people of Earth be kinder and gentler to each other while flying around in blue spandex and a cape…that damn cape always gets in the way. However the evil General Zod played by the ever ass-holish Michael Shannon from “Boadwalk Empire” (poor guy never plays a nice person) tries to rebuild his destroyed home on Earth at the expense of it’s people. If you know the story of Superman then you get the idea of this and it doesn’t take much explanation.

My big complaint with this version of Superman is something that story telling in these comic films have gotten really good over the years, the story of the man outside the suit. “Man of Steel” really focuses on the story of Superman while leaving some good, unexplored area of Clark Kent’s life out. They show the typical how his powers develop, how he has issues fitting in and how he finds out about his past but they left out the humility of the character. How does Clark shave? Did he have an awkward moment with a girl? In the “Dark Knight” series, “The Amazing Spider-Man” and of course with “Iron-Man” you get some idea of who this person is before they “suit up,” which in “Man of Steel” the character is very stern, very strict and lacks any comedic relief which I really believe is a misstep in helping these franchises appeal to a mass audience, mostly geeks like myself but my fiance’ allowed me to put up a 6’5 Iron-Man fathead in our house so she’s even into that series, although I’m pretty sure she’d let me put up a Henry Cavill one too…ick.

This reboot on the other hand isn’t bad. It’s a different way of telling the story, going by way of flash backs rather then just laying it out for you in a proper timeline and they throw a few twists in some of the tidbits of the Superman lore. The 3D is actually worth it on this film as the action scenes are a plenty and there’s so much stuff flying at your face (see ah, it’s Superman and ah…flying) that it makes the extra $3 worth it. I wasn’t too keen on the casting of the ever in trouble Lois Lane played by Amy Adams, an OK casting but am I flying half way around the world to make sure she doesn’t fall out of a space ship?….eh.

Overall this is worth seeing in the theater so make the effort. And for the love of God…don’t text in the movie theater!
